Wayne Wonder

Wayne Wonder, born Von Wayne Charles on 26 July 1972 in Buff Bay, Portland, Jamaica, is a celebrated reggae and dancehall artist best known for his international hit “No Letting Go” (2003). He began singing in Sunday school and started songwriting at age 13, gaining early exposure with a weekly slot at Metro Media in Allman Town. His first single, “Long and Lasting Love” (1985), was produced by King Tubby, though Tubby’s untimely death in 1988 temporarily stalled Wonder’s early career. During this period, he released his debut album, One More Chance, and recorded several other singles, including “It’s Over Now”, establishing himself in the Jamaican music scene. Wonder’s career gained momentum through his collaboration with Dave Kelly at Penthouse Studios, producing hits such as “Saddest Day” and the album Part 2. He toured internationally alongside major reggae artists, including Marcia Griffiths, Tony Rebel, and Buju Banton, and wrote songs for other performers, notably contributing to Banton’s early hits. Wonder also formed bands such as Alias and Entourage, blending his reggae roots with emerging sounds, and expanded his musical style by incorporating hip hop elements into albums like Da Vibe (2000) and Schizophrenic (2001). His global breakthrough came after signing with Atlantic Records, where the 2003 single “No Letting Go”, built on the Diwali riddim, reached #11 in the US and #3 in the UK, earning him international recognition. Subsequent albums, including No Holding Back and compilations like Inna Bashment Style: The Roots Of An Urban Warrior (2005), cemented his reputation as a versatile and enduring artist. Later releases, such as Foreva (2007) and My Way (2012), demonstrated his continued influence on reggae and dancehall, maintaining his status as one of Jamaica’s most respected contemporary musicians.
