Country: Jamaica
Albert Valentine "Tony" Chin is a renowned Jamaican guitarist known for his extensive work with iconic reggae artists including Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Freddie McGregor, Bunny Wailer, and many others. He began his musical career as a drummer but switched to guitar in the late 1960s when he joined bassist George "Fully" Fullwood to form the Riddim Raiders, a rocksteady band that later evolved into the influential Soul Syndicate. This band became a staple backing group for numerous reggae recordings, collaborating with producers such as Keith Hudson, Niney the Observer, and Bunny Lee. Chin’s guitar style was highly distinctive and played a key role in shaping the "flyers" sound of mid-1970s reggae, a style popularized by Bunny Lee. His innovative playing contributed to the texture and rhythm of countless reggae tracks during this period, cementing his reputation as one of the genre’s foundational session musicians. In 1981, Chin relocated to California, where he joined Jack Miller’s International Reggae All Star and played in the band supporting Andrew Tosh, son of Peter Tosh. In the 1990s, he lived in Florida and became a member of the successful U.S. reggae band Big Mountain. Today, Chin resides in Los Angeles, continuing to collaborate with Soul Syndicate bassist George "Fully" Fullwood and remaining an active contributor to reggae music.
