Country: Jamaica
The Twinkle Brothers are a long-running Jamaican reggae band formed in 1962 in Falmouth, Jamaica, by brothers Norman Grant and Ralston Grant. After winning local talent contests, they recorded their first single, “Somebody Please Help Me,” in 1966 for producer Leslie Kong, and went on to work with major Jamaican producers such as Duke Reid, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Bunny Lee, and Phil Pratt. During their early years, the group performed widely on Jamaica’s hotel circuit, blending calypso, soul, pop, and emerging reggae styles. In the early 1970s, the band began producing their own music, culminating in their debut album Rasta Pon Top (1975), which firmly established their Rastafarian roots reggae identity. Norman Grant also became an influential producer, working with artists such as E.T. Webster. The band signed to Virgin Records’ Frontline label in 1977, releasing albums including Love, Praise Jah, and Countrymen. After being dropped by Virgin in the early 1980s, Norman Grant relocated to the UK and continued releasing music independently under the Twinkle Brothers name via the Twinkle label. Since the 1990s, the Twinkle Brothers have gained international recognition through a unique collaboration with Polish folk group Trebunie-Tutki, blending reggae with traditional Tatra Mountain music. Still led by founding member Norman Grant, the band remains active in the 21st century and is widely respected as one of reggae’s premier foundation live bands, continuing to tour globally and maintain a dedicated fanbase.
