Country: Philippines
Tropical Depression is a pioneering Filipino reggae band formed in 1987 by vocalist/guitarist Dominic “Papadom” Gamboa and guitarist Lawrence “Bonglennon” Eudela. Rising to mainstream prominence in the early 1990s, the band became a key force in the Pinoy rock explosion, blending roots reggae with socially conscious Filipino songwriting. Their classic lineup featured musicians such as Lito Crisostomo, Pex Holigores, TJ Espinola, Mike Llacar, Brutus Lacano, and backing vocalists Arlene Empalmado and Lala Lejeune. The group is best remembered for enduring anthems like “Kapayapaan,” “Bilog Na Naman ang Buwan,” and “Alaala,” songs that helped popularize reggae in the Philippines while carrying messages of peace, reflection, and social awareness. Tropical Depression’s sound and ethos cemented their status as trailblazers who expanded the reach of reggae within the local rock scene. Following the death of founding frontman Dominic Gamboa in 2013, the band went on hiatus. They reunited in 2015 with original members and new vocalists, continuing the legacy with renewed energy. As of 2024, Tropical Depression remains active with a refreshed lineup, honoring their roots while carrying Filipino reggae forward for a new generation.
