The Wailing Souls

The Wailing Souls are a Jamaican reggae vocal group formed in the mid-1960s, originally known as The Renegades. The founding members—Winston “Pipe” Matthews, Lloyd “Bread” McDonald, and George “Buddy” Haye—emerged from the same musical training circles as The Wailers and recorded early material at Studio One under producer Coxsone Dodd. Renamed The Wailing Souls in 1968, the group built a strong foundation with socially conscious and roots-oriented singles like “Dungeon” and “Thou Shalt Not Steal,” while navigating frequent line-up changes that became a defining feature of their long career. During the 1970s, The Wailing Souls rose to prominence through collaborations with key reggae producers, including Lloyd Daley, members of the Wailers, and especially Joseph Hoo Kim at Channel One Studios. Backed by The Revolutionaries, they released a string of influential roots reggae hits such as “Things and Time,” “Back Biter,” and “Jah Jah Give Us Life.” Their international breakthrough came with the 1978 Wild Suspense album on Island Records. In the 1980s, they continued evolving their sound by working with producers like Sly and Robbie, Junjo Lawes, and King Jammy, releasing albums such as Fire House Rock and Stormy Night while spending significant time based in the United States. In the 1990s and beyond, the group entered a major-label phase, signing with Sony and releasing All Over the World (1992), which earned them a Grammy nomination and mainstream exposure, including appearances on film soundtracks and US television. Despite later label setbacks, The Wailing Souls remained active, earning two more Grammy nominations for albums like Psychedelic Souls and Equality. Known for their versatility, they have recorded reggae reinterpretations of rock and folk classics alongside original material. With Matthews and McDonald as the enduring core, The Wailing Souls remain one of reggae’s most respected and long-running vocal groups.
