The Specials, also known as the Special AKA, were an influential English 2 Tone and ska revival band formed in Coventry in 1977. The original stable lineup included Terry Hall, Neville Staple, Jerry Dammers, Lynval Golding, Roddy Radiation, Horace Panter, John Bradbury, and horn players Dick Cuthell and Rico Rodriguez. The band combined ska and rocksteady rhythms with punk energy, often delivering overtly political and socially conscious lyrics, primarily written by Dammers. Their early success included UK chart-topping hits like Too Much Too Young (1980) and Ghost Town (1981), which captured the social unrest of the era. In 1981, Hall, Staple, and Golding left to form Fun Boy Three, while the remaining members continued as the Special AKA, producing hits like Free Nelson Mandela before Dammers dissolved the band in 1984 to focus on activism. Following the split, former members pursued various musical projects: Hall formed the Colourfield and later had a solo career, Staple and Golding participated in bands like Sunday Best and Special Beat, and Panter and Radiation joined multiple ska and Two Tone projects. The band first reunited in 1993 as Specials MkII, touring internationally and releasing albums including Today's Specials (1996) and Guilty 'til Proved Innocent! (1998), though original members were gradually replaced by session musicians. The Specials returned to prominence with a reformation in 2008, led by Hall, Golding, and Panter, touring globally, performing at major events like the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony, and releasing new material, including the albums Encore (2019) and Protest Songs 1924–2012 (2021). The band’s legacy ended with the deaths of key members: drummer John Bradbury in 2015 and frontman Terry Hall in 2022, after which bassist Horace Panter confirmed the group would cease to exist.
