The Movement is an American reggae band formed in 2003 in Columbia, South Carolina, by childhood friends Josh Swain and Jordan Miller. Initially a duo using a drum machine, they soon added Jon Ruff (“DJ Riggles”) and released their debut album, On Your Feet (2004), which became a staple of the “alternative reggae” genre. After relocating to Philadelphia, they solidified their live lineup with drummer Gary Jackson and bassist Jay Schmidt, releasing their second album, Set Sail (2008), which reached #7 on iTunes’ Top 100 Reggae Albums. Over the years, The Movement experienced several lineup changes, including temporary departures by Swain and Miller, but continued producing music and touring extensively. Albums such as One More Night (2010), Side By Side (2013), and Golden (2016) saw them reach the top of the Billboard Reggae Albums chart, with Golden also earning recognition as Surf Roots Radio’s Album of the Year. Their sixth album, Ways of the World (2019), featured collaborations with artists like Stick Figure, Iya Terra, and Chali 2na, solidifying their reputation in the modern reggae scene. In 2022, The Movement released Always With Me, their first self-produced album on R4RE Records, featuring guest artists Clinton Fearon, HIRIE, Iration, Slightly Stoopid, and SOOM T. In 2025, they released Visions, continuing their blend of reggae, rock, and hip-hop influences. Known for their two-part vocal harmonies and “alternative reggae” style, the band draws inspiration from a wide array of artists, including UB40, Sublime, Pixies, Outkast, Beres Hammond, Dennis Brown, and Steel Pulse, merging traditional reggae with personal and contemporary elements.
