The Melodians

Country: Jamaica

The Melodians were a seminal rocksteady group formed in 1963 in Kingston, Jamaica, by Tony Brevett, Brent Dowe, and Trevor McNaughton, with songwriting contributions from Renford Cogle. Initially performing locally, the group recorded with Prince Buster before moving to Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One, producing early hits like "Lay It On" and "Meet Me". Their success continued through the late 1960s on Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label with tracks such as "You Have Caught Me" and "I'll Get Along Without You", culminating in their biggest hit, "Rivers of Babylon", produced by Leslie Kong, which became a Rastafarian anthem and was featured in the film The Harder They Come. During this period, Brevett also pursued solo work, notably with "Don't Get Weary". Following Kong’s death in 1971, the group worked with Lee Perry and Byron Lee before Brent Dowe left in 1973 for a solo career. The Melodians briefly reformed in the late 1970s and early 1980s before regrouping again in the 1990s as part of the roots revival. They continued recording and touring internationally, including appearances at the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in 2002. In 2017, the group released The Return of the Melodians, which reached number 19 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart, reflecting their lasting impact on reggae and rocksteady music. The group suffered significant losses over time, with Brent Dowe passing away in 2006 from a heart attack, Tony Brevett dying of cancer in 2013, and Trevor McNaughton, the last original member, passing from respiratory failure in 2018. Despite these tragedies, The Melodians’ legacy endures through their classic recordings, influence on the Rastafarian movement, and recognition by the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association, which honored them with an Iconic Award in 2017.
