Country: Jamaica
The In Crowd are a Jamaican reggae showband that gained popularity in the late 1970s, best known for hits like “We Play Reggae” and “Back a Yard.” The band was led by Filberto “Fil” Callender (vocals and lead guitar) and included Errol Walker (lead vocals), Clevie Browne (drums, vocals), Tony Lewis (bass, vocals), Freddie Butler (keyboards), and Wigmore Francis (guitar), with a horn section of Egbert Evans and Barry Bailey. They recorded two albums, His Majesty Is Coming and Man From New Guinea (released on Island Records), and had additional hits with “His Majesty Is Coming” and “Born In Ethiopia.” The band split in the 1980s but reformed in 2014 to record a new album. After the band’s initial run, Clevie Browne became part of the renowned production duo Steely & Clevie, while Errol Walker moved into an events planning role at the Financial Services Authority. Fil Callender, originally from Panama, had a distinguished early career as a drummer and guitarist, playing in the Studio One house band on classic tracks like The Abyssinians’ “Satta Massagana” and The Slickers’ “Johnny Too Bad.” Callender went on to pursue a solo career, and in 1980 he became a committed Christian, focusing primarily on church bands. In 2013, he was awarded the Order of Distinction by the Jamaican government in recognition of his contributions to Jamaican music.
