Country: Hawaii
The Green is a reggae band formed in 2009 on Oahu, Hawaii, known for blending dub-heavy roots reggae, lovers’ rock, pop, and rock with strong Hawaiian cultural themes. What sets the band apart is its four lead vocalists and songwriters, creating a rich, layered sound. The group quickly gained popularity in Hawaii with their smooth harmonies, conscious lyrics, and island-rooted identity, establishing themselves as a standout act in modern reggae. Their breakthrough came with their self-titled debut album The Green (2010), powered by the hit single “Love I,” which stayed on the Billboard Reggae Chart for a record 69 weeks. This success continued with Ways & Means (2011) and Hawai‘i ’13 (2013), both of which topped the Billboard Reggae Chart and won major awards, including multiple Na Hōkū Hanohano Awards. These releases helped propel the band onto international stages, touring alongside major reggae acts and performing at large festivals worldwide. The Green maintained their momentum with later projects such as Marching Orders (2017), Black & White (2019), and Brand New Eyes (2021), further solidifying their reputation for musical consistency and growth. Beyond music, the band has been vocal about Hawaiian identity and environmental stewardship, notably with the single “My Hawai‘i,” whose proceeds supported grassroots Hawaiian causes. Today, The Green stands as one of the most successful and influential reggae bands to emerge from Hawaii, balancing global appeal with deep cultural roots.
