The Gladiators are a legendary Jamaican reggae vocal group formed in 1968 by Albert Griffiths along with his childhood friends David Webber and Errol Grandison. The group’s name was reportedly suggested by a fellow bus passenger during their early recordings. Their first major success came in 1969 with the single "Hello Carol", produced by Coxsone Dodd, which topped the Jamaican charts. That same year, Webber fell ill and was replaced by Clinton Fearon, while Grandison left in 1973 and was succeeded by Gallimore Sutherland, forming the lineup that would define much of their classic period. Throughout the early 1970s, the Gladiators recorded extensively for various producers, including Lloyd Daley and Lee "Scratch" Perry, but it was their work at Studio One that produced enduring hits like "Bongo Red", "Jah Jah Go Before Us", "Mr. Baldwin", and "Roots Natty". In 1976, the group signed with Virgin Records and released their debut album Trenchtown Mix Up, produced by Tony Robinson. This album featured re-recorded versions of their early hits and was followed by Proverbial Reggae in 1978. During this period, the band included Griffiths on lead guitar and vocals, Fearon on bass and vocals, Sutherland on rhythm guitar and vocals, with backing from prominent musicians such as Sly Dunbar, Lloyd Parks, Uziah "Sticky" Thompson, and Earl "Wire" Lindo. Studio One also issued a compilation, Studio One Presenting the Gladiators (1978), showcasing tracks from 1968–1974. Later albums with Virgin included Naturality (1978), Sweet So Till (1979), and Gladiators, the latter produced by Eddy Grant and recorded with session musicians from Aswad, which failed to match the success of their earlier work. Despite changes in the reggae landscape, including the rise of dancehall and ragga in the 1980s and 1990s, the Gladiators remained active.
