The Cables

Country: Kingston

The Cables are a Jamaican rocksteady and reggae vocal trio, formed in 1962 and led by Keble Drummond, with harmony singers Elbert Stewart and Vince Stoddart. The group gained prominence in the late 1960s with Studio One recordings, most notably the hit “Baby Why”, which became a classic and influenced later deejay and reggae tracks. Their 1970 album What Kind of World is recognized for showcasing some of the most underrated vocals of the era. Drummond drew inspiration from his previous group, The Sylastians, and the name “The Cables” symbolized sending a message across the world. After leaving Studio One in 1970 due to financial disagreements, The Cables recorded with other producers, including Harry J, sometimes under pseudonyms. Despite their efforts, they were unable to replicate their early success. Drummond departed in 1972 to pursue a solo career and briefly formed the group True Experience. The band continued to release albums, including the 1977 Baby Why, recorded with musicians from The In Crowd and Third World, maintaining their presence in the Jamaican music scene. Over the years, The Cables have reunited multiple times for performances and recordings, including a 1993 album Baby Why credited to “Cables and Friends,” and shows at Reggae Sunsplash in 1994 and the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in 2011. Drummond also released a solo album, Mellow Moods of Music, in 2013. The group’s legacy endures through their smooth harmonies, rocksteady roots, and the lasting influence of tracks like “Baby Why” on subsequent reggae and vocal artists.
