Sublime

Sublime is an American ska-punk band formed in 1988 in Long Beach, California, by vocalist and guitarist Bradley Nowell, bassist Eric Wilson, and drummer Bud Gaugh. Known for blending punk rock with reggae, ska, hip-hop, surf rock, and funk, the band built a strong underground following in Southern California through energetic live shows and DIY releases on their own label, Skunk Records. Their early work reflected this eclectic style, especially on 40oz. to Freedom (1992), which gained regional popularity and later national attention through college and alternative radio airplay. Despite growing momentum, Sublime’s rise was cut short when Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose in May 1996 at the age of 28. Just two months later, the band released their self-titled third album, which unexpectedly became a massive commercial success, peaking at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and spawning hits like “What I Got,” “Santeria,” “Doin’ Time,” and “Wrong Way.” The album went on to be certified five times platinum, cementing Sublime’s place in mainstream music history and making them one of the most influential ska-punk and reggae-fusion bands of the 1990s. Following Nowell’s death, Sublime officially disbanded, though their popularity continued to grow through posthumous releases, compilations, and a lasting cultural impact. Wilson and Gaugh later formed Long Beach Dub Allstars and, in 2009, reunited with singer Rome Ramirez under the name Sublime with Rome. In 2023, Sublime reunited again with Nowell’s son, Jakob Nowell, on vocals, signaling a new chapter for the band. Decades after their formation, Sublime remains a defining symbol of Southern California’s beach-centric alternative music scene and a major influence on modern reggae rock and ska acts.
