Steel Pulse

Steel Pulse is a British roots reggae band from Handsworth, Birmingham, England, formed in 1975. The founding members included David Hinds (lead vocals, guitar), Basil Gabbidon (lead guitar, vocals), and Ronald McQueen (bass), with early contributions from Basil’s brother Colin and Mykaell Riley. Inspired by Bob Marley & the Wailers’ Catch a Fire, they began performing politically conscious reggae reflecting the struggles of black youth in the UK. Initially barred from Caribbean venues in Birmingham due to their Rastafarian faith, they gained exposure by playing punk venues and aligning with the Rock Against Racism movement. Their early singles, Kibudu, Mansetta And Abuku and Nyah Luv, set the stage for their socially aware musical identity.

Signed by Island Records, Steel Pulse released Handsworth Revolution in 1978, which marked a significant milestone for roots reggae outside Jamaica. Their single Ku Klux Klan, addressing racial injustice, remains one of their most iconic tracks. Throughout the 1980s, the band formed their own label, Wise Man Doctrine, and partnered with Elektra Records for US distribution, releasing albums such as True Democracy, Earth Crisis, and the Grammy-winning Babylon the Bandit (1985). Their music consistently combined political messages, Rastafarian philosophy, and activism, while they toured internationally, performing at major reggae festivals and breaking ground in American media, including becoming the first reggae band to appear on The Tonight Show.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Steel Pulse continued producing socially conscious music with albums like Rage and Fury (1997) and African Holocaust (2004), collaborating with artists such as Damian Marley and Capleton. Their 2018 album Mass Manipulation, their first in 14 years, was nominated for a Grammy, proving their continued relevance in contemporary reggae. Steel Pulse has won one Grammy and received nine nominations overall, cementing their legacy as pioneers of roots reggae outside Jamaica. Their enduring influence comes from blending militant social commentary, Rastafarian spirituality, and global perspectives, making them one of the most respected reggae bands in the world.
