Joseph Bonner, better known as Spanner Banner, is a Jamaican reggae and dancehall singer from Rock Hall, St. Andrew, born on 6 February 1969. He comes from the musically gifted Bonner family, which includes his brothers Pliers, Richie Spice, and Snatcha Lion, all respected figures in reggae music. Spanner Banner began his career in the late 1980s on the Bidia sound system, steadily building a reputation for his smooth vocals and emotionally driven lyrics. He first gained major attention with songs like “Life Goes On”, produced by Winston Riley, and further solidified his influence by co-writing “Tease Me” for Chaka Demus & Pliers, one of reggae’s biggest international hits. His solo breakthrough came in the mid-1990s with albums such as Now and Forever (RAS Records) and Chill (Island Jamaica), the latter produced by legendary duo Sly & Robbie. In 2001, he released Real Love on Heartbeat Records, featuring collaborations with Tanya Stephens, Lady Saw, and Sean Paul. After spending several years in England, Spanner Banner returned to Jamaica and successfully revived his career. His 2009 hit “Rolling Stones”, produced by Donovan Germain, earned him the Biggest Comeback Artiste award at the 2010 EME Awards. In 2011, he launched his own label, Bonner Yard Productions, and in 2014 announced plans for new music, continuing his legacy as one of reggae’s most soulful and enduring voices.
