Prince Mohammed

George Nooks, also known as Prince Mohamed or Prince Mohammed, is a Jamaican reggae singer who first gained recognition as a deejay in the 1970s. Born around 1958, he began his musical journey singing in his church choir before performing at school events and talent shows. He rose to prominence under the name Prince Mohamed through his work with top producers such as Joe Gibbs, contributing deejay vocals to major tracks including Dennis Brown’s “Money in My Pocket,” and later recording for influential labels like Groovemaster, GG Records, and Hungry Town. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Nooks became a respected figure within roots reggae and sound system culture, collaborating with notable artists such as Augustus Pablo, Horace Andy, and Leonard Dillon. Albums like People Are You Ready and African Roots helped cement his reputation, while tracks such as “Forty Legs Dread” and his version of “Tribal War” marked a transition from deejaying to singing. As his vocal style developed, he earned frequent comparisons to Dennis Brown, an influence he later honored with tribute recordings. From the mid-1990s onward, George Nooks enjoyed renewed commercial success, with his 1996 single “Real Man” charting on Billboard and his 1997 self-titled album earning multiple Tamika Awards. He remained highly productive, releasing numerous solo and collaborative albums, and later shifted much of his focus toward Gospel music following a personal loss in 2001. His 2016 album Ride Out Your Storm achieved strong Billboard chart positions, and alongside his recording career, Nooks has also worked as a producer through his Total Records label, continuing to shape reggae music into the 21st century.
