Johnny Hunnigale is a British reggae singer known for his smooth vocals, combination hits, and contributions to the UK reggae and roots scene. Early Life and Career Beginnings Started as a bass guitarist with the Vibes Corner Collective. In 1983, released his debut single “Slipping Away” on LGR Records, followed by “Got To Know You” on Street Vibes, a label Hunnigale co-founded with Fitzroy Blake, a sound engineer and drummer from the Street Vibes Collective. Rise to Success Topped the UK reggae chart in 1987 with “Be My Lady”, followed by his debut album In This Time. Achieved another UK reggae number one with “Ragamuffin Girl”, a Discomix single recorded with Tippa Irie, which was also named Best British Reggae Record by Echoes newspaper in 1987. Awards in 1987: Best Newcomer at the Celebrity Awards Best British Reggae Album at the British Reggae Industry Awards Collaboration and Production Work Worked on combination projects with Tippa Irie, including albums: The New Decade (Island Records) Done Cook and Currie (Rebel MC’s Junglist Drum and Bass Tribal Base label), which he produced and played all instruments for. Recorded in Jamaica with Gussie Clarke, focusing on dubplates and roots reggae. Roots and Conscious Reggae 1992: Released second solo album Mr. Vibes. 1993: Collaborated again with Tippa Irie for “Shouting For The Gunners”, celebrating Arsenal FC. 1994: Shifted to conscious, spiritually mystic, politically charged roots reggae and Rockers style with: Mr. Government War on Babylon vocal and dub releases Produced with Neil “Mad Professor” Fraser, with dubs released in the Black Liberation series and played on Jah Shaka sound systems. Later Success and Legacy 1995: Reunited with Tippa Irie for a version of The Abyssinians’ “Declaration of Rights” for the Nah Give Up compilation.
