Papa San

Country: Jamaica

Tyrone Thompson (born 1 July 1967), professionally known as Papa San, is a Jamaican reggae, dancehall, and gospel singer. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, he was raised by his Rastafarian grandmother and began performing with sound systems such as Stereophonic the Bionic, Black Scorpio, and Creation in the late 1970s. His career gained national attention after winning the Tastee Talent Contest in 1981, which helped launch him into Jamaica’s growing dancehall scene. Papa San became one of the most prominent dancehall deejays of the late 1980s and 1990s, scoring major hits including “Animal Party,” “I Will Survive,” “Style and Fashion,” “Legal Rights,” and “Round Table Talk,” featuring Lady G and Maddy Maddy Cry. His rise was overshadowed by personal tragedy in the early 1990s, most notably the murder of his brother and fellow deejay Dirtsman in 1993, followed by the deaths of other close family members and his own legal struggles. These events deeply affected his life and career. In 1997, Papa San converted to Christianity, leading to a shift in his musical focus from secular dancehall to gospel and roots reggae, while maintaining his distinctive vocal style. He later settled in Weston, Florida, where he and his wife Debbie Thompson were ordained as ministers and founded Our Father’s Kingdom International Ministries in 2011. His album One Blood topped the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart in 2014, and in 2021 he received the ABGMA Soca and Urban/R&B/Pop Award, highlighting his enduring influence across both secular and gospel music scenes.
