Country: Jamaica
Nicky Thomas (born Cecil Thomas, 30 May 1944 – c.1990) was a Jamaican-born reggae singer who rose to prominence in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Raised in Portland Parish, he began his music career after moving to Kingston, where he recorded his first major hit “Run Mr Nigel Run” for producer Derrick Harriott. The song’s success briefly earned him the nickname Mr Nigel and marked the start of a strong recording career in Jamaica. He later formed a successful partnership with producer Joe Gibbs, recording popular songs such as “Running Alone,” “Have a Little Faith,” and “God Bless the Children.” In 1970, Thomas achieved international recognition with “Love of the Common People,” which became a Top 10 hit in the UK and led to an album release on Trojan Records. The song’s success established him as one of the first Jamaican reggae artists to cross over to a mainstream European audience. Relocating to the United Kingdom, Thomas continued recording and touring throughout the 1970s, working with producers including Dandy Livingstone and releasing albums such as Tell It Like It Is and Images of You. His later work leaned more toward roots reggae, though he never again matched his early chart success. Nicky Thomas died around 1990, remembered for his soulful delivery and his role in bringing reggae to a wider international audience.
