Country: Wisconsin
Natty Nation is an American reggae–rock band formed in 1995 in Madison, Wisconsin, known for blending roots reggae, dub, rock, hip-hop, and socially conscious lyrics. Founded by members who split from a more traditional reggae group, the band quickly developed a harder, more rock-influenced sound while maintaining reggae’s spiritual and political core. Their debut album The Journey Has Just Begun… (1996) received strong local support, followed by Earth Citizen (1998), later named one of the top 25 Madison pop albums of all time by Isthmus for its unique fusion and lasting influence. After the death of frontman Jeffrey “J-Maxx” Maxwell in 2001, bassist and vocalist Demetrius “Jah Boogie” Wainwright became the band’s primary lyricist and lead voice, guiding Natty Nation through a period of evolution and experimentation. The group released multiple live albums, studio projects, and compilations, including Reincarnation (2008), which leaned more toward hip-hop production and outspoken political themes. Natty Nation toured extensively across the United States and internationally, including military base tours in Africa, the Middle East, Japan, and the Marshall Islands. From 2010 onward, Natty Nation solidified its legacy as one of Wisconsin’s most decorated bands, earning numerous Madison Area Music Association Awards and induction into the Madison Area Music Association Hall of Fame in 2019. Their 2016 album Divine Spark debuted at #3 on the Billboard Reggae Chart, confirming their national reach. Known for powerful live performances, collaborations with reggae legends, and a sound often described as “Steel Pulse meets Hendrix,” Natty Nation continues to represent a distinctly American take on reggae rooted in unity, activism, and musical diversity.
