Country: Brazil
Natiruts was a Brazilian reggae band formed in Brasília in 1996, led by vocalist Alexandre Carlo, with the aim of popularizing reggae music in Brazil. Emerging from a local scene dominated by rock, the band stood out by focusing on themes of spirituality, environmentalism, and positivity. After several name changes, they settled on Natiruts and released their debut album Nativus in 1997, establishing strong reggae roots despite being based far from Brazil’s coastal, tropical centers. The band’s major breakthrough came with the 2009 album Raçaman, propelled by the hit single “Sorri, Sou Rei,” which became one of their most recognizable songs. Natiruts continued to gain national and international recognition, with their 2012 acoustic album Acústico earning a nomination for Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album at the 2013 Latin Grammy Awards. Over the years, they performed at major events, collaborated with other reggae artists, and maintained relevance through notable releases and live performances. Musically, Natiruts blended reggae with elements of rock, funk, and dancehall while maintaining lyrics centered on spiritual awareness and ecological consciousness. Their influence extended beyond Brazil, earning praise from international artists like Michael Franti. In 2024, the band announced their farewell tour, Leve com Você, marking the end of a nearly 30-year career that helped shape and popularize Brazilian reggae.
