Country: Panama
Nando Boom is a reggae en Español artist from Panama, led by Fernando Brown, who began his music career in 1977 and officially launched the Nando Boom project in 1985. He emerged as one of the key pioneers of reggae en Español, alongside El General, helping to shape the sound and direction of Latin urban music during its early years. His fast-paced vocal delivery and energetic style set him apart and influenced later musical developments across Latin America. Nando Boom is widely credited with influencing the evolution of reggaeton, particularly through his innovative performance style and distinctive backward dance moves. This dance style later became closely associated with reggaeton culture and nightlife. Some of his most popular songs, including “A Danzar” and “Esa Chica Me Vacila,” remain staples in nightclubs throughout Latin America, highlighting his lasting impact on the genre. Despite his musical influence and success, Nando Boom’s career has not been without controversy. He received notable recognition, including the Caracol of the Caribbean Award in 1992 and a Stefano Award in Miami in 1994. However, he has also faced criticism for releasing songs containing homophobic lyrics, such as “No queremos mariflor,” which drew backlash from the gay community in Panama and sparked broader discussions about social responsibility in music.
