Musical Youth

Country: England

Musical Youth is a British reggae band formed in 1979 in Birmingham, England, by the sons of local fathers, including Frederick Waite Sr., formerly of the Jamaican group The Techniques. The band initially performed as schoolboys, influenced by reggae artists like Sugar Minott, Aswad, and Dennis Brown. They gained prominence with the 1982 single “Pass the Dutchie”, which topped charts worldwide, and released their debut album The Youth of Today the same year. The band achieved further hits with songs like “Youth of Today”, “Never Gonna Give You Up”, and collaborated with Donna Summer on “Unconditional Love”. Despite early success and a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, Musical Youth’s career faltered after their 1983 album Different Style! failed commercially. Personal, legal, and financial issues plagued the band, and they disbanded in 1985 after Dennis Seaton left. Tragedy struck with the death of Patrick Waite in 1993 and long-term struggles faced by Junior Waite, while other members pursued solo careers or music production ventures. In 2001, Dennis Seaton and Michael Grant reformed Musical Youth as a duo, performing nostalgia tours and releasing new music. They re-recorded classics like “Pass the Dutchie”, covered songs such as Boney M.’s “Mary’s Boy Child – Oh My Lord”, and Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come”, culminating in the album When Reggae Was King, released on CD in 2018 and digitally in 2020. Frederick Waite Jr. passed away in 2022 at the age of 55 from complications related to schizophrenia.
