Michael Rose

Michael Rose (born 11 July 1957) is a highly respected Jamaican reggae singer, best known as the lead vocalist of Black Uhuru during the group’s most influential years from 1977 to 1984. Raised in the Waterhouse district of Kingston, he began performing as a teenager and recorded early singles in the 1970s with producers such as Niney the Observer and Lee “Scratch” Perry. His unique vocal style, rooted in Waterhouse, helped shape a distinctive sound in reggae music. Rose rose to international prominence after joining Black Uhuru, becoming the group’s lead singer and main songwriter. With Rose at the helm, the band released several landmark albums, including Showcase (1979), Red (1981), and Anthem (1983). Anthem won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1985, cementing Rose’s status as one of Jamaica’s most distinguished vocalists. He left the band in 1985 following internal conflicts and briefly withdrew from the music spotlight. From the late 1980s onward, Rose focused on a prolific solo career, releasing numerous albums and singles, many produced by Sly & Robbie, and achieving chart success in Jamaica and Europe. He later reunited with Black Uhuru for touring in the 2000s while continuing solo projects. In recent years, he has remained active internationally, collaborating with Subatomic Sound System and releasing new work, including Rockin’ Like a Champion (2024). He has also used several spellings of his name, most notably Mykal Rose, which he describes as an Ethiopian-inspired version of his birth name.
