David Constantine Brooks, known professionally as Mavado, is a Jamaican dancehall singer born on 30 November 1981 in Kingston, Jamaica. He grew up in the Cassava Piece community and was mentored by Bounty Killer, who introduced him to the music industry and his manager, Julian Jones-Griffith. Mavado took his stage name from the Swiss watch brand Movado, with a modified spelling. He achieved his breakthrough in 2005 with the single “Real McKoy”, followed by his debut album Gangsta for Life: The Symphony of David Brooks in 2007, which included the hit “Dying”. That year also brought legal troubles, including a detainment and later arrest related to firearm charges. Mavado has faced criticism for anti-gay lyrics and the promotion of violence, which led to temporary bans in some Caribbean countries. Despite this, his music reached international platforms, including being featured in Grand Theft Auto IV and collaborating with artists like G-Unit and Drake. He won the UK MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act in 2008 and starred in Drake’s “Find Your Love” music video in 2010. In 2011, he launched his own label, Mansion Records, and signed with DJ Khaled’s We the Best Music Group, releasing singles such as “Emergency” and “Survivor”. In the following years, Mavado continued to release music and collaborate widely. His track “Progress” appeared on DJ Khaled’s Major Key album in 2016, nominated for a Grammy, and he formed the MVP camp with Alkaline and Jahmiel in 2017. Collaborations with Sean Paul followed, including “I’m Sanctify” in 2018, and in 2019 he released “Top Shotta Is Back”. In 2020, he released a diss track aimed at Drake titled “Enemy Line”, demonstrating his continued presence and influence in dancehall and reggae music.
