Matumbi

Country: England

Matumbi were a prominent British reggae band formed in 1971 in South London, best known as the first successful band of guitarist and producer Dennis Bovell. The original lineup included Tex Dixon, Euton Jones, Dennis Bovell, Errol Pottinger, Eaton "Jah" Blake, Bevin Fagan, and Nicholas Bailey (later Nick Straker). Early in their career, they served as a backing band for touring Jamaican musicians and gained recognition after opening for The Wailers at a 1973 Ethiopian famine relief concert. Their cover of Bob Dylan’s “Man in Me” in 1976 became the biggest-selling UK reggae single of that year, marking their breakthrough. The band underwent several lineup changes, with Webster Johnson, Glaister Fagan, and Lloyd "Jah Bunny" Donaldson joining after the departure of original members. Matumbi signed with Harvest Records, toured with Ian Dury and the Blockheads, and recorded sessions for John Peel’s BBC Radio 1 show in 1978. That same year, they wrote and performed the theme for the BBC television series Empire Road, which became one of their signature songs. Their debut album, Seven Seals (1978), was followed by Point of View (1979), which brought them a top 40 hit in the UK. Matumbi continued releasing albums through the early 1980s, including Testify, recorded in Jamaica and co-produced by Bevin Fagan and Euton Jones, but none matched their earlier success. The band eventually disbanded, with members pursuing other projects: Dennis Bovell became a renowned solo artist and producer, Lloyd Donaldson joined The Cimarons, and Fagan and Blake recorded as The Squad. Bevin Fagan passed away in 2008 at the age of 54.
