Country: England
Mafia & Fluxy are a British reggae rhythm section and production duo, made up of brothers Leroy (bass) and David Heywood (drums). Their musical careers began in 1977 with the London reggae band The Instigators, after which they became a sought-after backing band for Jamaican artists touring the UK. In 1987, they traveled to Jamaica and built rhythm tracks for major producers including Bunny Lee, King Jammy, Mad Professor, Donovan Germain, and Philip “Fatis” Burrell, quickly becoming one of the most in-demand rhythm sections during the ragga era. In addition to session work, Mafia & Fluxy launched their own label and produced for top reggae artists such as Sugar Minott, King Kong, Gregory Isaacs, Johnny Osbourne, Cornell Campbell, and General Levy. They also created the Reggae Heights album series, featuring classic singers like Johnny Clarke, Barry Brown, Gregory Isaacs, and John Holt performing over rhythms recreated by the duo, showcasing their ability to bridge classic and contemporary reggae sounds. Beyond production, Mafia & Fluxy have also remixed tracks for international pop artists, including Janet Jackson, demonstrating their versatility across genres. Leroy Mafia has additionally pursued a solo career, further highlighting the duo’s influence and longevity in reggae music.
