Mad Lion

Country: United States

Mad Lion (born Oswald Priest) is a Jamaican-born dancehall, ragga, and hip-hop artist known for blending reggae rhythms with hip-hop elements. Born in London and later moving to Brooklyn, New York, he was introduced to the music scene by reggae star Super Cat, who suggested his stage name—an acronym for Musical Assassin Delivering Lyrical Intelligence Over Nations. Mad Lion gained early recognition by adding hip-hop rhythms to Shabba Ranks’ “Jam”, and achieved wider fame with his 1994 debut album Real Ting, featuring hits like “Take It Easy”. He won the Source Award for Reggae Artist of the Year in 1994 and Reggae Hip-Hop Artist of the Year in 1995. Throughout the 1990s, Mad Lion collaborated frequently with hip-hop artist KRS-One and worked with numerous producers, including DJ Playero, DJ Tony Touch, and DJ Nico Canada, helping bridge reggae, dancehall, and hip-hop in innovative ways. He also topped the US reggae charts in 1997 with the single “Carpenter”, cementing his reputation as a key figure in reggae fusion. Mad Lion made appearances in prominent music videos, including Craig Mack’s Flava in Ya Ear remix featuring Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J, Rampage, and Busta Rhymes. In addition to his mainstream collaborations, Mad Lion contributed to the emerging reggaeton scene in the mid-1990s, working with Puerto Rican artists such as Mexicano 777, Rey Pirin, Jahdan, and the Black Hearted Skavengerz. He featured on tracks like “Guerreros”, “Guerrillero Borincano”, and “Many Many More”, lending his dancehall and rap skills to reggaeton riddims and further expanding the cross-genre influence of his music.
