Marion Marie Hall (born 12 July 1969), formerly known as Lady Saw, is a Jamaican singer whose career made her one of the most influential figures in dancehall history. Born in Galina, Saint Mary Parish, she began performing with local sound systems as a teenager after working in Kingston’s Free Zone. Taking the name Lady Saw in 1987, inspired by Tenor Saw, she quickly gained attention for her bold lyrical style and strong stage presence, earning the title “Queen of Dancehall.” Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Lady Saw released a string of successful albums including Lover Girl, Give Me the Reason, Passion, and 99 Ways, many of which charted on Billboard’s Top Reggae Albums. She became internationally known through major crossover collaborations, most notably “Smile” with Vitamin C and “Underneath It All” with No Doubt, the latter reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and winning a Grammy. Albums like Strip Tease and Walk Out further solidified her global profile, while her explicit “slackness” style challenged gender double standards in dancehall. From the 2010s onward, Hall expanded her work through her own label, Divas Records, and released later projects including My Way and Alter Ego. In 2015, she publicly converted to Christianity, was baptized, and announced her retirement from dancehall, reintroducing herself as Minister Marion Hall. She transitioned fully into gospel music, releasing albums such as When God Speaks and His Grace. Beyond music, she founded The Lady Saw Foundation to support abused and vulnerable women, marking a major personal and artistic transformation.
