Country: Jamaica
King Stitt King Stitt was a pioneering Jamaican deejay and one of the original voices of ska and early reggae. Rising from Sir Coxsone’s Downbeat Sound System in the late 1950s, he was crowned “King of the Deejays” in 1963 and became known as “The Ugly One,” turning his physical condition into a bold artistic identity. His classic recordings with producer Clancy Eccles—such as “Fire Corner” and “Lee Van Cleef”—helped shape the foundation of deejay culture. Revered in Jamaica and the UK, King Stitt remains a foundational figure in reggae and sound system history.
