Joseph Cotton, born Silbert Aston Walton in 1957 in St. Ann, Jamaica, is a reggae singer who has been active since the mid-1970s. He initially worked in the Jamaican police force before turning to music, recording under the name Jah Walton with producer Joe Gibbs in 1976. He later collaborated with Harry Mudie, producing popular tracks such as Stay a Yard and Praise God, Touch Her Where She Want It Most, and Married to a Bank Cashier, the latter being the title track of his debut album. In the mid-1980s, Walton adopted the stage name Joseph Cotton, achieving notable success in the United Kingdom with the single No Touch the Style, which earned him a television appearance on Channel 4’s Club Mix in 1987. He followed this with several reggae chart hits, including Things Running Slow, Pat Ha Fe Cook, Tutoring, Judge Cotton, and What Is This, solidifying his presence in the international reggae scene. Cotton has continued performing and recording through the 1990s, 2000s, and into the present day. He currently resides in France, where he performs at venues across the country and throughout Europe, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with other reggae musicians, maintaining his influence in the reggae community.
