Joe Higgs (1940–1999) was a Jamaican singer, songwriter, and mentor, widely regarded as a foundational figure in reggae music. Often called the "Godfather of Reggae" or "Father of Reggae", he played a key role in shaping the careers of Bob Marley and the Wailers and influencing modern Jamaican music. Early Career and Contributions Began recording in 1958 with producer Edward Seaga, both as a solo artist and with Roy Wilson. First release: "Oh Manny Oh" (1958), one of the first records pressed in Jamaica, selling 50,000 copies. Worked with Clement "Coxsone" Dodd in the late 1950s and early 1960s. After Wilson emigrated in 1964, Higgs pursued a solo career, also working with Carlos Malcolm and the Afro-Jamaican Rhythms, and joining Lynn Taitt’s The Soul Brothers as lead vocalist. Mentorship and Influence Mentored young musicians in Trench Town, including Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh, helping to shape the Wailers’ early sound. Introduced the Wailers to Clement Dodd in 1963. Worked closely with Jimmy Cliff, writing songs like "Dear Mother" and acting as his bandleader. Wrote "Steppin’ Razor" (1967), later recorded by Peter Tosh; Higgs won a court case to establish authorship. Solo Career Singles and notable releases include: "More Slavery", "Creation", "Let Us Do Something", "World Is Upside Down" Debut album: Life of Contradiction (recorded 1972, released 1975), combining reggae, jazz, and R&B influences. Second album: Unity Is Power (1979). 1980s albums: Triumph (1985), Family (1988), and Blackman Know Yourself (1990, with the Wailers Band). Final album: Joe and Marcia Together (1995), a collaboration with his daughter Marcia Higgs. Themes and Legacy Higgs’ music often reflected his life in Trench Town, expressing the struggles, poverty, and resilience of Kingston’s communities.
