Jah Shaka (born Neville Powell, c. 1948 – 12 April 2023), also known as the Zulu Warrior, was a legendary Jamaican roots reggae and dub sound system operator based in South East London. His name combines the Rastafarian term for God with that of the Zulu king, Shaka Zulu. Early Life Born in Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, an area that produced many reggae stars including Toots Hibbert, Barrington Levy, and Freddie McGregor. Moved to England in 1956 and attended Samuel Pepys School in Brockley, South London. Began working on the Freddie Cloudburst Sound System at age 12 before founding his own system. Career By the late 1970s, Jah Shaka had gained a large, loyal following due to: Spiritual content High-energy rhythms Massive sound systems Dynamic personal style Attracted fans from outside reggae circles, including post-punk pioneers like Public Image Ltd and The Slits. 1980: Appeared in the film Babylon, operating his sound system in a climactic soundclash scene. 1986: Featured in the Black Audio Film Collective documentary Handsworth Songs. Maintained a roots-focused sound throughout the 1980s while other systems moved toward slack dancehall. 1989: Visited Jamaica and collaborated with musicians including King Tubby. 2002: Performed for a large crowd in Central Park, New York. 2009: Featured in the documentary All Tomorrow’s Parties. Label & Music Launched Jah Shaka Music in 1980. Released albums often under Commandments of Dub, featuring artists such as: Max Romeo, Earl Cunningham, Johnny Clarke, Bim Sherman, Prince Alla, Aswad, Ras Imru Asha, Dread & Fred In the 21st century, releases included established singers like Tony Tuff and newcomers like Rockaway and Principle over riddims produced by his son Malachi (Young Warrior).
