Jah Mason (born in Manchester Parish, Jamaica) is a Jamaican roots reggae singer and Rastafarian artist, active since the early 1990s. Early Life Grew up in a Christian family in Manchester Parish, Jamaica. Nicknamed Perry Mason in childhood for his ability to resolve disputes. This nickname became his stage name for his debut single, Selassie I Call We, released in 1991 on Junior Reid's JR record label. Rastafari Conversion In 1995, Jah Mason joined the Bobo Ashanti order of the Rastafari movement. He began performing and recording under the name Jah Mason after linking with the David House group. Musical Career Achieved Jamaican hits with: My Princess Gone Lion Look Featured on singles by Jah Cure. Albums 2002: First albums Keep Your Joy and Working So Hard released. Released albums at a rate of more than one per year, including: Wheat and Tears (2006, Greensleeves Records) Princess Gone...The Saga Bed (2006, VP Records / Warner distribution) 2015: Released 19th studio album Love & Wisdom. Reception Wheat and Tears was noted by the Jamaica Gleaner for lacking originality but still providing a strong vibe for reggae fans. AllMusic’s David Jeffries praised Jah Mason as “an effortlessly agile artist able to communicate love, pathos, revolution, spirituality, and even sensuality on equal terms.” His track Mi Chalwa, produced by Soundism’s Vladi Vargas, was featured on Greensleeves’ compilation The Biggest Reggae One Drop Anthems 2005, receiving critical acclaim. Personal Life Tragically, on 29 April 2025, his son Jabari ‘Baba Skenng’ Johnson was killed during a TikTok live stream in St. Andrew, Jamaica. Jah Mason is recognized for his prolific output, spiritual Rastafarian lyrics, and steady influence in roots reggae over more than three decades.
