Half Pint (born in West Kingston, Jamaica) hails from the Rose Lane community, a notable birthplace of reggae legends including Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Toots Hibbert. He began singing in the school choir at All Saints’ Primary School and, after finishing secondary school in 1976, pursued a career in Jamaican music. Early in his career, Half Pint performed with sound systems such as Black Scorpio, Jammys, Gemini, Lee’s Unlimited, and Killimanjaro, while also collaborating with producers like King Jammy, Sly & Robbie, George Phang, and Bobby “Digital” Dixon. He worked with fellow artists including Garnett Silk, Tony Rebel, and The Tamlins. Half Pint released his first single, Sally, in 1983, followed by Winsome, both becoming local hits. He gained international recognition with singles such as Mr. Landlord, Level the Vibes, Substitute Lover, and his greatest hit, Greetings (1986), recorded in a single take. His influence extended beyond reggae: Winsome was covered by The Rolling Stones (renamed Too Rude), and his song Loving was covered and sampled by Sublime. Half Pint’s music also featured in films such as The Mighty Quinn (1989), Substitute 2 (1998), and the French comedy Mookie (1998). Despite periods of reduced studio activity, he released Legal We Legal, followed by a U.S. tour with Anthony B, and continued international performances. He received “The Key to the City of Lauderdale Lakes” in 2000, appeared on Sly & Robbie’s 25th Anniversary U.S. tour, and worked with the bands DubCat and Sotti Records.
