Gussie Clarke

Country: Jamaica

Augustus “Gussie” Clarke (born 1954) is a highly influential Jamaican roots reggae and dub producer whose career began in the early 1970s. He entered the music industry cutting dub plates and made his production debut in 1972 with U-Roy’s “The Higher The Mountain.” Clarke quickly established himself as one of reggae’s premier producers, particularly for deejays, with landmark albums such as Big Youth’s Screaming Target and I-Roy’s Presenting I Roy. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, he worked with major artists including Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Augustus Pablo, Leroy Smart, and The Mighty Diamonds, releasing much of his work on his own Gussie and Puppy labels. In the late 1980s, Clarke successfully transitioned from classic roots reggae into the emerging digital dancehall era, while maintaining a polished, internationally appealing sound. His productions blended traditional reggae sensibilities with computerized riddims, first notably heard on The Mighty Diamonds’ The Real Enemy (1987). In 1988, he launched the Music Works studio, which became central to his digital-era success, producing major hits such as Gregory Isaacs’ “Rumours” and J.C. Lodge’s “Telephone Love.” These records dominated charts in Jamaica and abroad, reinforcing Clarke’s reputation as a forward-thinking producer. Clarke continued shaping reggae into the 1990s, producing collaborative albums like No Contest by Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs, as well as successful releases for artists including Shabba Ranks, Maxi Priest, Deborahe Glasgow, Freddie McGregor, and Cocoa Tea. Though his output slowed after the late 1990s, his influence remained strong through reissues, one-riddim projects, and international collaborations, including work with Rihanna in 2006. His contributions have been formally recognized with a Musgrave Medal in 2014 and the Order of Distinction (Commander rank) awarded by the Jamaican government in 2019.
