Groundation

Country: United States

Groundation is an American roots reggae band from Sonoma County, Northern California, blending traditional reggae with strong jazz and dub influences. Formed in 1998 by vocalist and guitarist Harrison Stafford, the band emerged from Sonoma State University’s Jazz Program, where Stafford and the original members were studying. The group takes its name from the Rastafarian Grounation ceremony, reflecting their deep spiritual and cultural connection to reggae’s roots. After releasing their debut album Young Tree in 1999, Groundation gained international recognition with Hebron Gate (2002), recorded with legendary engineer Jim Fox, who has since worked on all their major releases. Albums such as We Free Again, Upon the Bridge, Building an Ark, and A Miracle established their reputation for progressive, genre-bending roots reggae. Known for their use of analog instruments, complex jazz-influenced arrangements, and improvisational live performances, the band developed a powerful global following and became a fixture at major international reggae festivals. Over the years, Groundation has toured more than 35 countries and continually expanded the boundaries of reggae. Their album The Next Generation (2018) showcased a bold fusion with big-band jazz and won Best Roots Reggae Album of 2018 from Reggae.fr. In 2022, they released One Rock, an album shaped by the global pandemic that honors reggae’s legacy by featuring iconic vocal groups such as Israel Vibration, The Abyssinians, and The Congos, reaffirming Groundation’s role as both innovators and custodians of roots reggae tradition.
