Gregory Anthony Isaacs OD (15 July 1951 – 25 October 2010) was a Jamaican reggae musician, widely regarded as one of reggae’s most soulful vocalists. Milo Miles of The New York Times called him “the most exquisite vocalist in reggae.” He was also known as the “Cool Ruler.” Early Career Isaacs began performing in Jamaican talent contests as a teenager. In 1968, he recorded his first single as Winston Sinclair, titled “Another Heartache”, for producer Byron Lee. Although it sold poorly, Isaacs co-founded the African Museum record label and shop with Errol Dunkley. His early recordings included hits such as “My Only Lover”—credited as the first lovers’ rock record—“All I Have Is Love”, “Lonely Soldier”, and “Loving Pauper”. In 1974, he achieved his first Jamaican #1 single with “Love Is Overdue”, produced by Alvin Ranglin. During the 1970s, Isaacs recorded for many top producers, including Winston “Niney” Holness, Gussie Clarke, Lloyd Campbell, Glen Brown, Harry Mudie, Roy Cousins, Sydney Crooks, and Lee “Scratch” Perry. He became a prominent reggae figure internationally, touring the US and UK, performing alongside Dennis Brown and Bob Marley. 1980s–1990s: Rising Fame and Challenges In 1978, Isaacs signed with Virgin Records’ Front Line label and appeared in the film Rockers. Although albums like Cool Ruler and Soon Forward did not initially sell well, they are now regarded as classics. He became a regular at Reggae Sunsplash (1981–1991) and continued releasing successful singles with labels like Pre/Charisma Records. His breakthrough to a wider audience came with the Island Records album Night Nurse (1982), featuring the hit title track. Despite this success, Isaacs faced severe personal challenges, including cocaine addiction, multiple arrests, and a six-month prison sentence in 1982 for possession of unlicensed firearms.
