Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad is an American reggae and jam band from Rochester, New York, founded in 2001. The group is known for their energetic live performances and their authentic roots reggae and dub sound, blending traditional reggae rhythms with jam band improvisation and world music influences. The band was formed when brothers Chris O’Brian (drums) and Matt O’Brian (guitar) teamed up with their childhood friend James Searl (vocals and bass). They began performing in Rochester before relocating to Ithaca, New York, to expand their audience. The name Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad was inspired by the fictional “Giant Panda Gypsy Blues Band” mentioned in Tom Robbins’ novel Another Roadside Attraction. GPGDS’ music combines reggae, roots, dub, and world beats with a jam band approach, emphasizing improvisation and extended live performances. Their shows are highly regarded and frequently recorded by concert tapers, with recordings often shared on Etree and the Internet Archive, helping the band build a dedicated following of fans who value both their live energy and studio work.
