General Levy

Country: England

General Levy (born 28 April 1971 in Park Royal, London) is a British dancehall and reggae MC of Trinidadian descent. He grew up in Harlesden and Wembley in northwest London, where he was exposed to the local sound system culture and began collecting dancehall tapes in 1981. By the age of 12, Levy was writing his own lyrics, and at 14, he formed his first sound system, Third Dimension, with friends. Levy’s early recordings were released on the independent label Fashion Records, which later partnered with London Records to distribute his tracks more widely. He also worked with producers Lloydy Crucial and Robbo Ranx, producing songs that gained traction in the underground dancehall scene. In 1994, Levy became embroiled in a controversy with the UK jungle scene following a misinterpreted comment in an interview with The Face magazine about his collaboration with M-Beat on the hit single “Incredible”, claiming, “I run jungle at the moment.” Despite the backlash, the song became a major hit and has since been featured in the film Ali G Indahouse and a Honda advertising campaign. Throughout his career, Levy collaborated with various artists, including Rocco Barker of Flesh for Lulu, Suggs of Madness, and R&B singer Mark Morrison, as well as dub producer Joe Ariwa. He performed on prominent sound systems in the late 1980s and early 1990s such as Java One Love, Java, and Tippertone Sound. In recent years, Levy has continued to collaborate with contemporary artists like Chase & Status, Fedde Le Grand, and Spragga Benz, maintaining his influence in the dancehall and reggae scenes.
