Freddie McGregor (born 27 June 1956 in Clarendon, Jamaica) is a Jamaican singer, musician, and record producer whose music career began at the age of seven. He first gained recognition as "Little Freddie" when he joined The Clarendonians alongside Ernest Wilson and Peter Austin, recording for Studio One. McGregor was also a member of the Generation Gap and developed his career further in the 1970s and 1980s, working with producers like Niney the Observer, Junjo Lawes, Linval Thompson, and Gussie Clarke. His Rastafarian faith, adopted in 1975, shaped much of his music, and he is a member of the Twelve Tribes organization. McGregor rose to international prominence in the early 1980s with hits such as "Bobby Babylon," "Big Ship," "Push Comes to Shove," "Just Don’t Want to Be Lonely," and "I Was Born a Winner", while also recording covers of classic reggae tracks. He toured extensively, established a licensing agreement with RAS Records in the U.S., and founded his own Big Ship label in 1983, producing artists including Papa San, Lieutenant Stitchie, Tiger, Luciano, and Mikey Spice. His albums Signature and Anything for You in the 2000s earned a Grammy nomination, demonstrating his continued relevance in reggae music. In the 2010s, McGregor continued releasing albums, including Di Captain (2012), which featured collaborations with Etana and Gappy Ranks. He received a Marcus Garvey Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 from the Institute of Caribbean Studies, recognizing his enduring contributions to reggae. McGregor’s musical legacy extends through his family, as one of his sons, Stephen "Di Genius" McGregor, has become a prominent dancehall producer and signed with Warner Chappell Music, ensuring that the McGregor name continues to influence Jamaican music.
