El General (born Edgardo Armando Franco, 27 September 1969) is a Panamanian musician widely considered one of the fathers of reggae en Español, a Spanish-language variety of dancehall reggae that emerged in Panama in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Early Life Born in Panama City, Panama, of Jamaican descent. Began singing and composing at age 12, experimenting with makeshift instruments. Grew up influenced by Bob Marley and Burro Banton. Early musical experience included performing with Renato and the Four Stars, where he earned the nickname El General. Later moved to the United States on a scholarship to study business administration, performing as an MC at parties and opening for dancehall and hip-hop acts. Career Started his professional music career at age 19. Known for pioneering Spanish-language dancehall/reggae, incorporating Jamaican riddims with Spanish lyrics. Major hits include “Tu Pum Pum” (1991) “Muévelo” (1991) – MTV award for Best Latin Video “Rica y Apretadita” “Te Ves Buena” Achieved 32 gold and 17 platinum records over a 17-year career. His style influenced the development of reggaetón in Puerto Rico and Latin America, connecting Afro-Panamanian culture with Caribbean and New York diaspora communities. Collaborated internationally, including performances with C+C Music Factory and appearances at venues like Madison Square Garden. Influence & Legacy Spanish Reggae in Panama served as both a musical and political statement for Black Panamanians, reflecting the struggles of Caribbean-descended communities. El General’s music helped bridge Jamaican dancehall with Latin American audiences, laying the foundation for modern reggaetón. His success highlights the cultural connections between Panama, the Caribbean, and Latino communities in New York. Retirement & Religious Life Retired in 2004 to focus on producing and later fully left music.
