Echo Movement is an American reggae and reggae-rock band formed in 2004 in New Jersey by brothers Stephen and David Fowler. The band began as a small independent project and gradually grew into a large ensemble, eventually becoming a seven- to eight-piece group with horns and guest musicians. Their early releases, including their self-titled debut (2005) and On My Way (2006), gained a regional cult following and laid the foundation for their distinctive blend of reggae, alternative rock, surf, and world music influences. The band’s national breakthrough came with their 2009 album In The Ocean, which sparked major growth, led to their first national tour, and earned them spots on the Vans Warped Tour in multiple years. The album stood out for its experimental elements, including guest appearances and a spoken introduction by physicist Stephen Hawking, as well as artwork by surf artist Jay Alders. Echo Movement continued pushing creative boundaries with Music Played On (2011), which reworked earlier material using analog effects and binaural beats, and Love and the Human Outreach (2012), described by the band as a romantic interpretation of theoretical physics. Echo Movement is known for labeling their sound as “new reggae,” blending classic reggae rhythms with modern alternative and electronic textures. Beyond music, the band has been active in social and cultural advocacy, particularly in support of marijuana law reform through NORML, and humanitarian efforts such as donating a portion of album sales to SurfAid International. Through consistent touring, festival appearances, and socially conscious themes, Echo Movement has built a reputation as an innovative and message-driven act within contemporary reggae culture.
