Michelle Downer (born April 1, 1978), professionally known as D’Angel, is a Jamaican reggae and dancehall singer, actress, model, and brand ambassador, widely referred to by The Gleaner as the “First Lady of Dancehall.” Born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, she began singing in high school, modeled internationally in the 1990s, and returned to Jamaica in 2002 to focus on her music career. She holds an associate degree in Accounting and Management and describes 2004–2005 as her breakout years in music. D’Angel gained major public attention through her music, performances, and high-profile marriage to fellow dancehall star Beenie Man in 2006. The pair collaborated on the song One Man and share a son, though their relationship ended in divorce after several public splits and reconciliations. Her career also faced controversy, including a five-year ban from performing at Sting in 2013 due to a spontaneous lyrical clash deemed inappropriate by event organizers, which drew additional criticism from international media. Despite setbacks, D’Angel remained influential in dancehall, releasing notable songs such as Stronger, which topped Jamaica’s music video charts, and Whipped, a response track released in 2017. That same year, she toured the United States with a socially conscious message against violence and crime and collaborated with Spice on No Worries. She has received multiple awards and nominations, performed at major events like Reggae Sumfest and the IRAWMA Awards, and continues to be recognized for her impact, resilience, and leadership in Jamaican dancehall music.
