Damian Marley

Country: Jamaica

Damian Robert Nesta Marley, born on 21 July 1978, is a Jamaican reggae musician and the youngest son of legendary artist Bob Marley and former Miss World 1976, Cindy Breakspeare. Nicknamed “Junior Gong,” a tribute to his father’s nickname “Tuff Gong,” Damian was only two years old when Bob Marley died. His upbringing reflected both privilege and struggle, a duality that later shaped his music and identity. Over the years, he has become one of the most successful members of the Marley family, earning multiple Grammy Awards and global recognition. Damian began his music career early, forming the group The Shephards at age 13 before launching a solo career in the mid-1990s. His breakthrough came with the album Halfway Tree (2001), which won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album and explored themes of class and social division. He reached international fame with Welcome to Jamrock (2005), an album praised for its bold commentary on poverty, politics, and crime in Jamaica. The title track became a global hit and established Damian as a powerful voice in modern reggae. Beyond his solo work, Damian Marley has collaborated widely across genres, most notably with rapper Nas on the album Distant Relatives (2010), which blended reggae and hip-hop while highlighting African heritage and social issues. He has also worked with artists like Mick Jagger, Skrillex, and A. R. Rahman. His later album Stony Hill (2017) won another Grammy, reinforcing his reputation as an artist who bridges traditional reggae with contemporary global sounds while delivering strong social messages.
