Daddy Freddy

Country: Jamaica

S. Frederick Small, better known as Daddy Freddy, was born in 1965 in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in the influential Trenchtown district near Studio One. Surrounded by reggae pioneers such as Jacob Miller and Ranking Joe, he was mentored early in performance and quickly developed a reputation for his natural vocal talent. After working with artists like Lt. Stitchie and Sugar Minott, Daddy Freddy recorded his first single, “Zoo Party,” in 1985, marking the start of his professional recording career. Daddy Freddy rose to prominence in the mid-1980s with the release of his debut album Body Lasher (1986), which produced multiple Jamaican top-ten hits, including the number-one single “Joker Lover” with Pinchers. His move to the UK in 1987 proved pivotal, as his collaboration with Asher D on Raggamuffin Hip-Hop helped pioneer a fusion of Jamaican ragga and UK hip-hop. The album attracted major international attention, leading to collaborations, samples, and influence across hip-hop and electronic music, as well as support for emerging UK reggae artists. At the height of his fame, Daddy Freddy broke the world record for the fastest rapper multiple times between 1989 and the early 1990s, reinforcing his reputation as an exceptional live performer. After signing with Chrysalis Records and releasing Stress in 1991, the demands of constant touring led him to take a break and reconnect with his roots in Jamaica. He later returned to the UK revitalized, releasing Old School – New School in 2000 and settling in Bristol, where he continues to create music, collaborate with producers, and mentor new generations of dancehall artists.
