Philip Thomas (born 12 February 1965), better known as Cutty Ranks, is a Jamaican dancehall singer born in Clarendon Parish, Jamaica. He began performing reggae at a very young age and was already active on local sound systems as a youth. By his early teens, he had immersed himself in Jamaica’s competitive sound system culture, balancing his growing musical ambitions with everyday work, including a brief period employed as a butcher after leaving school. Cutty Ranks developed his skills across several prominent sound systems, including Gemini, Rebel Tone, Papa Roots, Stereo Mars, Arrows, Metro Media, Killamanjaro, and Sturmars, performing alongside influential artists such as Early B, Super Cat, Josey Wales, Nicodemus, and U Brown. His recording career took off in the mid-1980s with his debut single “Gunman Lyrics” for Winston Riley’s Techniques label in 1986. He went on to work with major producers and labels including Shocking Vibes and Penthouse, scoring hits such as “The Bomber” and “Pon Mi Nozzle,” which helped establish him as a leading voice in hardcore dancehall. In the 1990s, Ranks gained international recognition through releases on London’s Fashion Records, including The Stopper (1991), and albums such as Lethal Weapon, From Mi Heart, and Six Million Ways to Die. His later work showed stylistic versatility, incorporating hip hop while maintaining strong lyrical content. From the 2000s onward, he released music on his own Philip Music label and became known for rejecting slackness in favor of more conscious themes. His career experienced renewed global visibility through sampled and guest appearances, including El Chombo’s viral hit “Dame Tu Cosita” and Run the Jewels’ RTJ4, confirming his lasting influence across dancehall, hip hop, and global music culture.
