Culcha Candela is a multicultural dancehall, hip hop, house, and reggae group from Berlin, Germany, officially formed on 7 July 2002. The founding members—Johnny Strange, Itchyban, and Lafrotino—were later joined by Larsito, Mr. Reedoo, Don Cali, and DJ Chino. The band reflects its members’ diverse backgrounds through lyrics in English, German, Spanish, and Patois. They released their debut album Union Verdadera in 2004, followed by Next Generation in 2005, establishing a reggae-influenced style and building a strong live performance reputation, including tours with Saïan Supa Crew, Gentleman, and Söhne Mannheims. Culcha Candela achieved major commercial success with their third album Culcha Candela (2007), propelled by the hit single "Hamma," which topped German charts and went platinum. Subsequent albums, including Schöne neue Welt (2009), earned gold and platinum certifications in Germany and Switzerland, blending party tracks, socially conscious songs, and ballads. They continued performing internationally, including a 2010 Central America tour, and released their first Best-Of compilation, Das Beste, featuring three new tracks. Over the years, several members departed, including Lafrontino in 2010 and Larsito and Mr. Reedoo in 2014, to pursue solo projects. The band signed with Warner Music in 2015 and released the album Candelistan, featuring singles such as "Wayne (feat. Curlyman)" and "La Noche Entera." Culcha Candela’s music combines upbeat party vibes with socially and politically conscious lyrics, showcasing their unique blend of reggae, hip hop, and dancehall. Despite lineup changes and breaks for solo projects, the remaining members continue to produce music and perform, maintaining the band’s signature multicultural and genre-crossing style.
