Country: Jamaica
Chaka Demus & Pliers are a Jamaican reggae duo made up of deejay Chaka Demus (John Taylor) and singer Pliers (Everton Bonner), best known for international hits such as “Tease Me” and “Murder She Wrote.” Although both artists had established solo careers, their partnership—formed in 1991 after performing together in Miami—proved far more commercially successful, especially with mainstream pop audiences during the 1990s. The duo’s early collaborations included hits like “Gal Wine,” produced by Ossie Hibbert, and led to work with major reggae producers such as Prince Jammy, Ranking Joe, and Mafia & Fluxy. Their debut album Gal Wine (1992) laid the foundation for global recognition, which peaked with the release of Tease Me. The title track became a major UK hit in 1993, reaching No. 3 on the Singles Chart, followed by chart-topping successes including “Twist and Shout,” making them the first Jamaican act in eight years to top the UK chart and the first to achieve three consecutive top-five UK hits. Their album Tease Me went on to top the UK Albums Chart in 1994 and achieved gold status. The duo later signed with Island Records, releasing For Every Kinda People in 1996, and continued recording and touring internationally. Notable later appearances included performances at Reggae Sunsplash, the American Music Awards alongside Alicia Keys, the BET Awards reggae tribute, and festivals worldwide. With continued releases such as So Proud (2008), Chaka Demus & Pliers remain one of the most successful reggae crossover acts of their era.
