Blue Riddim Band

The Blue Riddim Band was a pioneering American reggae group based in Kansas City, Missouri, best known for becoming the first U.S.-based band to perform at Jamaica’s Reggae Sunsplash festival in August 1982. Formed out of the earlier group Rhythm Funkshun, the band was led by instrumentalist Bob Zohn and drummer Steve “Duck” McLane, whose frequent trips to Jamaica in the 1970s helped them build strong connections with influential Jamaican musicians. These relationships shaped the band’s authentic reggae sound and laid the foundation for their later international recognition. By the late 1970s, Blue Riddim Band was touring extensively across the United States, both headlining shows and backing major reggae artists such as Dennis Brown, Burning Spear, Peter Tosh, and Bob Marley. Their debut studio album Restless Spirit was released in 1981, and their live performance at Reggae Sunsplash was recorded and later released as Alive in Jamaica. That album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album in 1986, marking a major milestone for an American reggae band. The group also gained wider exposure when their song “Love People” appeared on the soundtrack of the 1986 film Club Paradise. In the mid-1980s, a management dispute forced the band to change its name to Strategic Dance Initiative (S.D.I.), though core members continued performing locally. Despite the death of founder Bob Zohn in 1987, the group reunited several times from the late 1990s onward, backing well-known reggae artists and releasing new recordings. Blue Riddim Band was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2007 and continued to release collaborative and tribute projects into the 2010s, solidifying their legacy as trailblazers of reggae music in the United States.
